CUCKOO FLOWER Cardamine pratensis Llaeth y Gaseg     This charming plant is also known as 'Ladies Smocks. A native of damp meadows, it is equally at home in bogs and drier areas. Flowering in spring, its dainty, silvery pink blossoms once inspired Shakespeare.                                                      Price    5/£5.50            10/ £9.50

KINGCUP Caltha palustris Gold y Gors             One of the first wetland plants to flower (March-May) with its striking golden flowers and roundish glossy leaves.  Otherwise called 'Marsh Marigold' it is happy in water logged ground and all light conditions, even the deepest shade.  Ideal for pond-side, bog or wet wood.   AGM

WATER AVENS Geum rivale Mapgoll Glan y Dwr   Found in shaded riversides this is intriguing to come across in the wild.  Reaching about 18" it has nodding flowers with a purple calyx and orange-pink petals, and divided leaves like its common cousin Wood Avens.                                                                        Price    5/£5.50   10/ £9.50

RAGGED ROBIN Lychnis flos-cuculi  Carpiog y Gors           A close relative of Campion, this enjoys moist to marshy ground all over this country and as far north as Iceland.  The flowers in summer have four deeply cut pink petals.                                                                                                                          Price    5/£5.50            10/£9.50

PURPLE LOOSESTRIFE Lythrum salicaria Llys y Milwr      An impressive summer flowering marsh plant, with 3ft tall spikes (hence the ‘Milwr’ or Soldiers in the Welsh) of brilliant purple flowers. It grows in rich marshy areas, stream and lakesides, and while it tolerates some shade, it will flower best in full sun.

MEADOWSWEET Filipendula ulmaria Bugeiles y weirglodd         Also known as 'Queen of the Meadow', (she's a shepherdess in Welsh) the fern like leaves and creamy blossoms in late summer have been used for flavouring potpourri for centuries.  It grows 3ft tall in any moist soil in full sun, liking waterlogged ground as well.

BOG VIOLET Viola palustris Fioled y Gors      This is a great plant for a shaded wet or boggy area.  Growing from creeping rhizomes, the round leaves and delicate pale lilac flowers are a delightful sight when they start appearing in April.                                                                                                      Price    5/£5.50            10/£9.50

MEADOW RUE Thalictrum flavum Arianllys   This plant of wet meadows and stream sides, grows from a rhizome to 1m high and produces clusters of cream yellow flowers in summer, hence the Welsh reference to silver.  It is more prevalent in the east of England where it is another native in decline.                              Price    5/£7.50

WATER FORGET-ME-NOT Myosotis scorpioides          The bright blue, yellow eyed flowers are found by ponds and streams all over Britain in summer.  This is the flower the romantic German knight picked for his lady before falling in the river and drowning immortalising the name for the whole Myosotis genus.  The old English and Welsh “Scorpion Grass” refers to the coiled flower buds, a common feature in the Borage Family.

YELLOW FLAG IRIS Iris pseudacorus  Iris Felen       This stately native Iris is ideal for pond side planting, but will grow well in damp or even waterlogged ground anywhere. GOLDEN SAXIFRAGE Chrysoplenium oppositifolium Eglyn cyferbynddail         This little plant covers damp or boggy shaded areas with a mat of bright greeny-gold all through spring and early summer.  The whole plant looks exactly like a tiny euphorbia, with the flowers themselves little green dots in the sea of gold.

BISTORT Persicaria bistorta Superba  Llys y Neidr  A handsome marginal plant with large dock like leaves and sturdy, long lasting pink pokers in May-June.  This is a selected form of the native bistort, which grows wild in damp mountain meadows, as well as hedge banks in our area.  It was once used as a herb to aid conception and child birth, and is still used in Easter Hedger pudding eaten in the Lake District. GLOBE FLOWER Trollius europaeus Cronell  Growing in the damp woods and meadows of Northern and Central Europe, this striking bog plant grows to 3' in retentive soil. The flowers are a beautiful soft citrus yellow forming a perfect globe, shining in the spring sunshine.                                                                     Price    £2.50 each
