DAFFODIL  SPECIES ( in addition to N.pseudonarcissus and N.obvallaris in Native Bulb section p.3)

Narcissus minor         This gorgeous little daffodil species from S France and Spain, is 4”-6” high with golden petals and trumpet. An early flowerer, Feb to March, depending on the season we’re having, it grows well here when given a well drained site perhaps with short grass.  AGM                                                   Price    5/£9.50

Narcissus pumilus      One of the earliest daffodils to appear this species is similar in form and to our own 'wild' daffodil but is slightly smaller and has deep yellow both in trumpets and petals like our Tenby daffodil.  Native to the Pyrenees, it has naturalised in various parts of the UK.                                       Price    5/£5.50            10/£9.50

Narcissus jonquilla JONQUIL The species jonquil, like its hybrids, is very fragrant, with a cluster of 5 or more small golden flowers per stem, and narrow dark foliage. Jonquils are late flowering Narcissi, blooming in April.            AGM

Price    10/£3.00          50/£11.50

Narcissus moschatus  This is easiest of the white species narcissi to grow.  It has been grown in Britain since the early 17th century and is both hardy and free flowering.  The flowers are carried drooping gracefully from the sturdy stems in a charming swanlike manner.  March 8” high.          AGM                           Price    5/ £7.50

Narcissus poeticus recurvus  PHEASANTS EYE   The old fashioned 'Pheasants Eye' narcissus is an old variety of the species found in meadows in central Europe.  With its pure white petals and a shallow greenish yellow cup with a crimson rim, it flowers late in the season, April and well into May. Very fragrant.            AGM

Price    10/£4.50          50/£17.50

Narcissus poeticus recurvus flore pleno        This is the old ‘Double White’, the choice double form of the Pheasants Eye (see above). Flowering in late May, long after the others have faded, its double white petals hold hints of green at the centre and a glorious scent.                                                                               Price    10/£4.50          50/£17.50

Narcissus x odorus     The Campernelle daffodil comes from a very old cross between a Jonquil and a wild daffodil, going back at least to the 17th century.  Low growing at 12", with golden yellow flowers showing in late April it has the scent of its jonquil parent and bright green foliage half way between the two.   Price    10/£4.00          50 /£16.50

Narcissus x odorus Plenus     This is the double form of the Campernelle daffodil, sometimes known as N. Rugulosus Flore Pleno, which is an unfortunate burden for a beautiful plant. Slightly taller than the single Campernelle, at 12”, it has neat, symmetrical double golden flowers plus a rich scent.                                Price            10/£4.00          50/£16.50

Narcissus tazetta Canaliculatus         This is an early cultivar, close to the original Mediterranean species has proved hardy here in our frosty valley in Wales.  Each stem produces up to 6 tiny flowers, white with a neat gold cup and the most amazing fragrance.  One stem will fill a room with scent.                           Price    10/£4.00          50/£16.50

Narcissus bulbocodium Golden Bells           The Hoop Petticoat Daffodil. While the sight of a large patch of these bell shaped daffodils flowering in grass is quite breathtaking, they can be tricky to establish. With this in mind we are offering this more vigorous cultivar, but with the same neat habit and bell flowers in golden yellow 9” high. The name says it all.                                                                                                           Price    10/£4.00          50/£17.50

HISTORICAL DAFFODILS   Many of these old and historic varieties suffered neglect as a result of changes in fashion.  They all have a charm that is lacking in many modern garish varieties.

Narcissus Telamonius Plenus           A double form of the wild Narcissus pseudonarcissus (8-12" March), these daffodils appear in woodlands all over Britain, sometimes appearing with a green tinge in the petals, as with our local "Derwen" daffodil. They are usually associated with the very old variety N. Van Sion, introduced in the 17th Century. The stocks we are growing on here, from British gardens, are smaller and wilder looking than the Van Sion offered by Dutch growers today, with a much smaller flowering bulb.                                             Price    10/£4.00            50/£15.50

Narcissus Rip Van Winkle   This was an originally an Irish cultivar from some point in the 19th Century, and is really a double form of N. pumilus  It has tousled greenish yellow petals, almost reminiscent of a dandelion and always arouses comment.  This small daffodil, ht.8", flowers Feb.-March, and is a great subject for naturalising amongst other early bulbs.                                                                                          Price    10/£3.50          50/£13.50

Narcissus Mrs Langtry         A variety introduced before 1869 and now deservedly making a comeback.  Strong growing with delicate creamy white, mid season, flowers. The slightly twisted petals give the nodding blooms a wild look.  Named after the actress (and mistress of Edward VII) Lily Langtree.                                                Price            5/£7.50

Narcissus White Lady           This charming delicately scented variety was introduced before 1898 and received an AGM in that year.  Raised by the Reverend GH Engleheart, it was a stalwart of the florists industry for many years.  The flowers are a beautiful cupped shape with satiny white petals, and a lemon cup. Flowering in April, height14"

Price    5/£5.50            10/£9.50

Narcissus Mrs RO Backhouse  This is the oldest of the pink daffodils and named by the breeder after his wife. It has ivory white petals and a creamy rose trumpet that ages to a beautiful glowing pink.  Flowering in April, height 16"

Price    10/£6.50          50/£18.50

Narcissus Little Witch           This cyclamineus hybrid was bred by Mrs RO Backhouse herself pre 1921.  With flying backswept primrose petals and a darker cup, this little daffodil braves the early March winds.  It is neat and cheerful, without a hint of pointed hats and broomsticks.                                                     Price    10/£4.00            50/£16.50

Narcissus Princeps    This is one of the oldest cultivars pre 1830, and it is still given the specific title Narcissus gayi which perhaps indicates that it was originally a form selected from the wild. Early flowering with a clear yellow trumpet and cream petals the cut flowers were once harvested by the million.         Price    5/£5.50            10/£9.50

Narcissus Seagull       This old variety was bred before 1895 by Engleheart  The name is a bit mystifying but it does have the colours of a herring gull, with white petals and a yellow cup with an orange rim.  Height 14", flowering in April flowering.                                                                                                                                  Price    5/£7.50

Narcissus Firetail       A late season daffodil with an eye catching combination of creamy white petals with a rich red-orange cup.  This was bred by EM Crosfield before 1910 from an old Backhouse hybrid N. Mrs C Bowley.

Price    5/£7.50

Narcissus WP Milner            Raised more than a century ago by Henry Backhouse, this variety has unusual swept forward petals which almost hide the trumpet.  The flowers are a pale straw at first but quickly change to milky white.  Flowering March/April, height10"                                                                              Price    10/£4.00            50/£16.50

Narcissus Bath’s Flame         Another of the Rev. Engleheart’s beauties from before 1913. Could it be a reference to a sweetheart in Bath?  This small cupped early to mid season daffodil has creamy yellow petals that do not fade, and an orange rim to the strong yellow cup.                                                                      Price    5/£5.50            10/£9.50

Narcissus Sulphur Phoenix  This very old double daffodil (pre-1820) has flowers like ruffled bunches of feathers in lemon and butter yellow.  Not too tall (8-10”) and sturdy with weatherproof blooms.                 Price    5/£7.50

Narcissus Glowing Phoenix  The Dutch know this aristocratic double gown since the 19th Century by the more prosaic name of Bacon and Eggs, which does not do justice to the combination of glowing orange and cream petals which make this Phoenix irresistible.                                                                                                  Price    5/£7.50

Narcissus Stella          Appropriately star shaped flowers are held on strong stems 10-12” high. The yellow petals have paler tips shading to a dark gold cup, with a soft satin sheen and delicate scent.                     Price    5/£7.50

Narcissus Hospodar  Dating back to before 1914 this mid season daffodil has primrose yellow petals that make a distinct star shape, with a soft orange cup.  The flowers are sun proof, so do not fade.                   Price    5/£7.50

Narcissus Lucifer      has delightfully twisted cream petals its small gold cup running to bright orange at the margins. This pre 1890 Engleheart cultivar was lost to cultivation until found recently in a Cornish garden.

Price    5/£7.50

Narcissus Barii Conspicuus  A very old (pre 1869) small cupped daffodil with petals opening deep yellow becoming sulphur yellow, the ribbed yellow cup with an orange rim.  Has a certain ethereal air but stands the weather. This stock has been brought on from bulbs found in a Kentish garden.                              Price    5/£5.50            10/ £9.50

Narcissus Canary Bird         Raised in Holland before1913 this is a sturdy Tazetta hybrid with yellow petal and striking orange cups. This is a hardy Poetaz  type, with a delicious scent derived from both its Tazetta and Poeticus parents. The long lasting flowers appear late in the season, extending into May.                              Price    5/£7.50

Narcissus Elvira         This charmer of a Poetaz will keep your spirits blithe, but you won’t need Madame Arcati to assist you here.  With white petals and a lemon cup this multi-headed daffodil also has an attractive fragrance. Again flowering late in the season.                                                                                       Price    5/£5.50            10/£9.50

Narcissus Pencrebar             For many years known as Queen Anne's Jonquil, now renamed after the place in Cornwall where a single plant was found surviving.  This attractive and fragrant dwarf double daffodil is excellent for naturalising and for borders. Later flowering (April), Height 9".                         Price    10/£5.50          20/£9.50

Narcissus Geranium              We have been growing this hardy old Poetaz for many years in our garden, and it always attracts attention.  With up to 6 glistening white flowers, each with a tiny orange cup per stem and a delicious scent, this is a superb cut flower, particularly valuable for cheering up cold spring days.  AGM

Price    10/£5.50          20/£9.50

Narcissus Scilly White           This old tazetta hybrid is just like the Paperwhite daffodils grown indoors for Christmas.  Unlike them however Scilly White can be grown and settled outside.  In April it has several flowers per stem with white cups and petals, and a gorgeous scent.                                            Price    10/£5.50          20/£9.50

Narcissus Rose of May          This is a beautiful late flowering pure white double daffodil. Coming out in May but a little earlier than the famous Double White above.  It is neater, shorter and more compact but has an equally gorgeous scent.  Pre 1950, so not quite as old, but a classic.                                                                          Price            5/£7.50
